Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Using Text Messages
This guide walks HCLI students through setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using a mobile phone number. After setup, Microsoft will send a verification code by text message whenever additional identity verification is required during sign-in.
Before You Begin
- Your HCLI email address
- Your HCLI password
- A mobile phone that can receive text messages
- An active internet connection
Section 1: Sign In and Start MFA Setup
Step 1: Sign In With Your HCLI Credentials
Open a mobile browser and go to Office.com. Enter your HC email address and password, then select Sign in.
Your HCLI email address will typically follow this format: FirstName.LastName@hcli.highlandscollege.edu.
Step 2: Select Next on the Security Prompt
After signing in, you will see a screen that says “Let’s keep your account secure.” Select Next to continue.
Section 2: Choose the Phone Verification Method
Step 1: Choose a Different Sign-In Method
When prompted to install Microsoft Authenticator, select Set up a different way to sign in near the bottom of the screen.
Step 2: Select Phone
On the Add a sign-in method screen, select Phone.
Section 3: Add and Verify Your Phone Number
Step 1: Enter Your Phone Number
Confirm that the country code is set to United States (+1), then enter your mobile phone number. Choose text-message verification and select Next.
Step 2: Enter the Verification Code
Microsoft will send a six-digit code by text message. Enter the code, then select Next.
Step 3: Select Done to Complete Setup
When you see Phone number added, select Done. Your text-message MFA setup is complete.
What Happens Next?
Your phone number is now registered as an MFA method. When additional verification is required, Microsoft will send you a text message with a security code.
Troubleshooting
